Congratulations to Nigel Gray, who has been awarded the GISC Supporter of the Year award 2019/2020. Nigel, who has supported the Gills for over 30 years, will be a familiar face with many Gills fans.
Nigel, who attended to his first Gills game in 1988, was surprised and delighted to be nominated. He will receive his glass trophy, Supporter of the Year Shield and a meal for himself and his wife at a later date.
When told about the award a proud Nigel said: “I am really proud to have been nominated and given this award - it means a lot. Thank you.”
He continued: “My first Gillingham game was a 3-3 draw against Peterborough in FA Cup 1st Round in November 1988. I was instantly hooked, seeing most of rest of home games that season, despite being relegated to then Division 4. Despite relegation we had the quality of Gavin Peacock, Steve Lovell and David Smith in the side.
“I purchased my first season ticket in 1989, in Rainham End, and have been a supporter ever since. That same season I also started travelling away from home regularly.”
Looking over the his 30 plus years Nigel added: “There have far too many highlights, and lowlights, to mention. I have made many lifelong memories and friends.”
Unfortunately, due to a recent diagnosis, Nigel has found it more difficult to reach his seat at the back of the Rainham End. Despite this he is determined to continued to support the Gills at Priestfield. He explained: “The plan was to be in the Rainham End for many decades to come, but unfortunately I was diagnosed with MND last year. However, this will not keep me away and I will still be up there, albeit on crutches. I intend to do so for as long as I possibly can! After all what is life without the Gills?”
Congratulations once again Nigel, we couldn’t think of a more worthy winner.
